Suggestions Please

I'm getting a new puppy next week. It is a english bulldog, beagle mix. I used to have a lab and one of my favorite things about him was I could he was so well behaved off his leash. Is it possible to achieve this with a beagle. I've heard you really have to keep an eye on them. Any feedback?

Re: Suggestions Please

I think it all depends on the particular dog in a mixed breed situation. YOu could either get the "follow your nose" of the beagle or craving human attention of the bulldog.

However, I see both breeds as the types that will quickly get out of control unless you are consistent with obedience. I would certainly suggest that this pup start obedience lessons once you have vaccinations done. Beagles are notoriously difficult and stubborn. Bulldogs can have a dominating tendency with an owner.

Also be aware of food obsession with the beagle part. The only beagles I ever see at the correct weight are those at dog shows. Every one that comes through our shelter are the size of at least two beagles and usually three! Work closely with your vet during the usual puppy visits to discuss food choices and amount. You might also look around our food forum and ask questions of other beagle owners around the board.

Your experience in obedience classes will give you an idea of how reliable this individual dog can be with recall, and whether you will be able to allow him off lead privileges.
