Other PetsEven though this is Dog Forums, not everyone can limit thier love to just dogs. This is your outlet to talk about other pets you may have or want and questions about them!
I was at a wedding today. It was a tropical weddin and they had beta fish all around. So at the end my cousin walks up and says, you won a beta fish! I was so happy. I named him Memo. prnounced like nemo but an m on the front.
So here are some pic and vedio!
Hmm, I am glad that you are happy about winning a fish when you didn't expect it.. Some folks might not be too happy. I feel sorry for the fish in those situations. I never like the idea of living things as raffles or door prizes. I am happy it worked out for this one.
It wasnt a cheap one. My cousin the one who got married, she owns a pet store and she put them in bowls and gave it out to kids who wanted one. She teaches us how to take care of them too! She is an animal lover. She has 5 dogs. Her husband was in the paper about his dogs. It was about good deeds.
Awesome you got a betta! I got two myself. But I hate when people do this at weddings because often times it falls into peoples hands who have no idea how to take care of it and often times keep it in the little tiny bowl they were in at the wedding. You are planning to put it in at least a 1-2 gallon tank right?
They gave me a bowl. I dk the size. These are pet store fish and she knows how to take care of them. She told the people she gave them to , to stop in and she will show them how to take care of them. Whats a 1-2 gallen tank look like? Sorry, I dont mesuments.
Is the bowl really tiny? If so then that is to small. A 2.5 gallon tank looks like this,
Edit: After watching that vid I can tell its one of those tiny bowls pet stores use to make room to put several bettas out at a time. If you can't get a bigger bowl, just ask the people at the pet store where the 1-2 gallon tanks are, then take out that plant because its taking up to much space and he will tear his fins on it. I'd actually recommend the Minibow. It's a 2.5 gallon tank as seen in the picture and it comes with a hood and light as well as a filter, though I don't recommend it because everytime I have ever put it in my bettas tanks, they just get caught under it. But with any tank under the size of 5 gallons will need to be cleaned either weekly or every other week.
My mom wont buy a big tank like that. She said we spend enough on star shes not spendin that much on a fish that can live in the bowl my cousin gave us. That vedio shows a better size of the bowl. Star is also in it. Hes not to happy about havin' a brother. hehe. I really wanted the beta but i cant have anything like a bigger tank
I too am a Betta Lover! I've had many over the years myself. Right now I have Fi fi the crown tail & Fluffy a vale tail. I have found that if the tank is the appropriate size they tend to live alot longer! My daughter took my sister's Betta & that thing last for a few years! When Benny passed, she was upset. We had a small backyard funeral & planted some tiny blue flowers on him & marked it. I had a great website I learned from. I'll see if I can find it.
There are many types & collors they come in. AWESOME hobby too!
I don't find it time consuming at all. With a bowl like you have make sure you do alot of water changes. I keep a clean jug type of container to keep my water in for the changes.
Here is an old picture of FiFi. He's abit older now so he got abit darker.
I always felt sorry for Betas. What is the deal, you can have more than one male in a tank, but not anything with the female? I dunno, but you always see them in a cup holder looking thing all alone. I got 1 goldfish at a wedding. Went from a bowl that you put tea candles in, to a 1 gallon bowl. My son thought he needed friends, so we bought 2 more and upgraded to a 10 gallon tank. That was almost 4 years ago, and the original wedding fish died about 2 months ago. But his albino buddy is still kickin. I now have a 55 gallon with 5 comets, 1 shebunkin, 1 fancy, and an alga eater. And the ten gallon was replaced by a 35 gallon currently housing 3 african cichlids and an algae eater. Be careful. Once the ball starts rolling, it's hard to stop.
That's what a 10 cent goldfish from a wedding looks like in my house, 4 years later.

Reason: really bad typing at 2am
Here's how it happens. My son caught a leopard frog and got one of those tiny plastic containers to keep him in.
That's no life for a frog, so we got a bigger tank and decided he needed "company." We got some newts.
In the blink of an eye, we had two 20-gallon tanks with little waterfalls, lush vegetation, soft lights . . . I wanted to vacation in there!
We got some fire-belly toads and taught them to eat freeze-dried flies from our hands. We had a special container to house the live crickets that some of the critters favored. We got a mud-puppy who was a picky eater. He wouldn't even eat the feeder guppies we got for him. He died, but the feeder guppies thrived and, after several generations, developed into some of the most beautiful (and hardy) guppies you can imagine.
I figure that free-range frog ended up costing me a couple of grand.
Oh, and congratulations on your beta. Sometimes they live a couple of days, but my daughter had one that moved to Missouri and back with her and lived a very long time under less-than-optimum conditions.

Hahaha. How sad are we? About once a week or so, I cut up frozen mini peas for the fish so they don't get constipated. And starry, all fish will grow to the size of their enviroment. Meaning, it will grow more in a bigger tank. A tank too small will stress a fish out thoug. And a stressed fish is a dead one. I love to just sit back and watch our fish. Sandy's crate is right in front of that tank, we've caught her twice now, sitting on top of her crate staring at them.
Were only havin' the one beta. So far memo is livin'. Went down there 1st thing to check on him . Goin' to the pet store to get a small bowl to but him in while im cleanin the tank and fish food and a net to catch him to put him in the other bowl.

Just the opposite. You can have multiple females in the same tank but you can't put male bettas together because they fight.
Awr, you beat me too it
Anyway, like Reno said...it is more or less a necessity that you don't keep males together. These fish were bred to fight (Chinese Fighting Fish) and don't hesitate to attack intruding males.
As much as you might not want to Starry, try to talk mom into a tank with at least a filter. If you just get a bowl, you have to change the water and clean the wate [b]a lot[b] more often.
its not really a bowl its more of a vase. lol. Well Im trying to talk my mom into it. As soon as the pet stores open in 2 hrs (noon) were going to get him food. I will try and talk her into one.

As long as we're being snooty here , I think they're Siamese - not Chinese.
When I was growing up (still an ongoing process) they were mostly called Siamese Fighting Fish. The Siamese Fighting Fish Public relations director started calling them Bettas - probably to prevent Michael Vick from starting betting rings and killing the inferior fighters.
Borzois were called Russian Wolfhounds and labradoodles were called accidents.
